Ego or Self

Unfortunately, lots and lots of people think happiness depends on controlling other people and situations, or possessing specific material objects. But this is not how to feel real peace and joy. It's only your ego controlling you.

"Oh the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person, having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all right out, just as they are -- chaff and grain together -- certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and with the breath of kindness blow the rest away.…"  —  Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Everyone wants unconditional love, where they feel safe, accepted as they are, and allowed to follow their heart. This requires putting ego aside and being truthful — as well as vulnerable — with another person. That doesn't mean surrendering to anyone else's ego, simply having the strength and faith to surrender to the path you both share.

"Open your body and your mind to the subtler levels of experience, letting go of your attempt to control, to be right, not worrying about appearances, not trying to be safe."  — Stephen Levine
